Some soap opera actress that I’ve never heard of was talking some bullshit about Viola Davis. Star of the extremely popular How To Get Away With Murder, Viola Davis is the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. In 67 years.
Her speech was dazzled in Black Girl Magic, and she was sure to share space with other Black women who are absolutely slaying in Hollywood. Taraji P. Henson wrapped her arms around Viola in a powerful hug, before giving her a standing ovation. Kerry Washington’s tears spoke volumes. Regina King and Uzo Aduba also won Emmy awards that night.
Viola’s speech was a true reality check for Hollywood. (Watch the full speech here).
And as soon as these powerful pro-Black words were transmitted across social media and television screens, I knew there would be a simpleton in White Women World arrogant and tone-deaf enough to express discomfort, immature enough to concede privilege, and obnoxious enough to force a re-centering of whiteness.
Enter Nancy Lee Grahn.
Here’s screenshots of her tweets because they’re sure to be deleted. In them you’ll see peak Caucasity. My favorite: I feel betrayed by the people I would’ve marched for.
Do I really need to dissect this? Do I really need to opine yet again that yes all women are oppressed, but Black women are oppressed most because of the overlapping and suffocating systems of racism, classism, and patriarchy? Do I really need to highlight that feminism without intersectionality is simply racism in panties?
Sigh. I’m sure the think pieces will be coming soon. Gawd Bless the Black women who will take time to write them. But not me. This woman who I literally never heard of is worth so much less than my precious time.
